**Al-Mustansiriya School** Al-Mustansiriya School is one of the most prominent cultural and historical landmarks in Iraq and the Islamic world. It is among the oldest educational institutions whose historic building still stands today. Commissioned by the Abbasid Caliph Al-Mustansir Billah in the 13th century, the school was inaugurated around **1233 CE** on the eastern bank of the Tigris River in the Al-Rusafa district of Baghdad. It was established as a distinguished center of learning that brought together both religious and secular sciences. Al-Mustansiriya was notable for being the first Islamic educational institution to teach the four major Sunni schools of Islamic jurisprudence under one roof. In addition to religious studies, it offered instruction in medicine, pharmacy, mathematics, Arabic language, the Qur'an, and Hadith. The institution also provided student accommodation, a large library, and a well-organized financial support system for its students, making it a pioneering model for universities of its time. The building itself is considered a masterpiece of Abbasid architecture. It features a spacious central courtyard with a fountain at its center, surrounded by iwans, lecture halls, and residential rooms for students. Its walls are adorned with intricate Islamic decorations and elegant Arabic calligraphy, reflecting the remarkable architectural style of the Abbasid era and its dedication to both knowledge and beauty. Despite the many historical events that Baghdad has experienced, Al-Mustansiriya School has remained a symbol of the golden age of Islamic civilization. Today, it is one of the most important archaeological and tourist attractions in the Iraqi capital, attracting visitors who wish to explore the rich history of education and Islamic architecture in Iraq.
